Itinerary highlights
●● Follow in the footsteps of the great Antarctic explorers such as Amundson Scott, Shackleton etc
●● See snow-covered mountains, mighty glaciers and spectacular iceberg sculptures.
●● Encounter rockhopper, gentoo, macaroni, king, Adelie, Magellanic and chinstrap penguins, seals, dolphins, whales and seabirds including albatross, shearwaters and petrels
●● Visit historic sites and the remains of past whaling operations
Day 1: Ushuaia | Fly Buenos Aires to Ushuaia and embark Silver Explorer sailing in the evening for the Peninsula via the Beagle Chanel.
Days 2-3: Drake Passage | Attend our wildlife, geography and history discussions that will prepare you for the exciting adventures ahead. Look out for whale, dolphin and albatross on the way and the first sightings of icebergs and snow capped mountains indicating our arrival at the South Shetland Islands.
Days 4-8: Antarctic Peninsula | Each day has Zodiac departures allowing wildlife viewing from sea level and expect to see crab eater seals relaxing on a nearby ice floe, leopard and elephant seals or a pod of Minke whales.
Conditions allowing we may visit: Aitcho Island and Brown Bluff with their colonies of Adelie and gentoo penguins, kelp gulls, and pintado petrels breed and where birds such as snow petrel and skuas are found and hauled-out Weddell and Antarctic fur seals may be seen. Paradise Bay with spectacular scenery of mountains, glaciers and icebergs and where we set foot on the continent itself. Paulet, Petermann & Pleneau Islands Home to vast colonies of birds such as Adelie penguins, blue eyed shags, kelp gulls, sheathbills and Wilson’s storm petrels.
Crater Lake to view its impossibly blue icebergs Port Foster, Whalers Bay on Deception Island to visit its crater lake via a narrow gap in the crater wall called Neptune’s Bellows. Port Lockroy, Goudier Island. A WW11 listening station subsequently a research station and now a museum and gift shop.
Days 9-11: Drake Passage & Ushuaia | We recross Drake Passage and your cruise ends with an early morning arrival with transfers to the airportfor return flights Buenos Aries.
